or welcome to the wonderfull world of
"corporations-givig-you-something-they couldn't
care less about"...
Sorry 4 sounding pessimistic (maybe someone will prove me
even uninformed & misguiding) but ...
... as far Apple goes I would rather support
half done feautureless project of opensource community(academic or
linux developers) then Apple.
D only thing Apple is willing to share is the stuff thay
Rnt S good as the next compettitors product (in this purticular case
Real heaving better server solution, Microsoft heaving better codec).
Apple is great company in packaging stuff ...
irony of the Rowenta-iRons like designed computers which are translucent
offering an insight of what is PC made off and in the same time keeping
all the hardware spec. a secret comes to my mind (Linux PPC & BeOS devs
know much more then me on this subject).
Apple is great in making OS ...
not realy fast in doing so since most of the users still miss
proper multitasking, preamtive multhithreading, proper network utils ...
so taking the BSD and gluing your own GUI for 3 years seams really cool
for NEXTgeneration OS. Xerox can know take a rest since the most
interesting stuff they showed to Jobs on his famos dev labs visit (GUI,
Intranet and network computing) are now finally all outside of their
control and well distributed to everyone willing to inovate.
Apple makes great hardware ...
the only problem some of the early clone makers like powercomputing
ware making it even better for their OS so they had to be put down.
Their hardware is/was also much more efficently used by both BeOS and
Linux PPC which seemed to be a good alternative even now for fast ageing
604 & 604e series who might not be able to use Mac OS X at all (have to
check on this ?).
Apple made best multimedia enviroment ...
now I will stop the joke and say QUICK TIME is fucking best thing we got
so far 4 anything that needs more then just plain linear playback ...
But will you ever see Apple opening it to developers ?
Will there be anyone else able to use Sorrenson codec as long as Apple
has it's hands over it ?
No WAY !
Heaving said this I hope that my posting will not start PPC-x86 discussion
or Apple-Microsoft or opensource-comercial software ... this is something
tottaly different.
Please keep on using lovely fruit color machines with fool proof interface
and ocasionaly think of your comodity and what is the price you pay for it
what is the mechanism behind it. You might even like the new interface of
OS X but booting to it will cost you extra RAM, extra HD space and who
knows how many more hours of getting use to new stuff ...
http://www.publicsource.apple.com/
is the ONLY thing APPLE gave (back?)
and supporting Darwin might make them look much better then they would
deserve in this particular case.
