Hallo Open-Xers!

Some of you have already heard from me and others have not (due to lack of
email address or a last minute addition of a project) My name is August
Black and will be coordinating the installation of the Open-X part of the
Festival.

Im writing to provide some intoductory information about the Open-X 1998.
This years Open-X will begin before the festival on Friday the 4th of
September and will go until Thursday the 10th. The public for the
festival will most likely first attend the festival in the Brucknerhaus on
Tuesday the 8th - the first day of the Symposium. The reason for starting
early is to allow everyone time to get situated and to allow a buffer
period to solve technical problems, to get to know each other and make
other adjustments.

In addition to the Open-X there will also be a presentation room known as
"Closed-X" on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th in the Kepplersaal at the
Brucknerhaus. Here, it is meant that each group can arrange to do a more
formal presentation of their (net)work. Presentations should last no
longer than 30 minutes. The closed-X room is equiped with normal
presentation gear - 1 projector (video capable), 1 PC & 1 Mac (with
network connections), and microphones and PA. There will soon be a web
schedule available where you can login and request a time and date. It
will be on a first come first serve basis and should be available in a
week or so. You are also welcome to send me a mail and request a time
slot.

Some words on our technical provisions: We have ordered and will be
installing a 2mb line in the brucknerhaus. That means there should be
plenty of bandwidth for most activites. If you are planning to do
bandwidth-intensive things please contact me immediately so that no
surprises occur on the 4th.

Also, there will be some real audio/video servers available in the
Brucknerhaus. If you are planning to do LIVE streaming of any kind,
please give me a general prediction of how many streams , of what
quality(kilobits/second), and whether it will be video or audio - that
includes streams that you plan to encode as well as those you plan to
recieve.

The in-house network will be based on a dynamic IP addressing system.
That means if you need a fixed IP for anything (such as a specialized java
application or a CGI-push camera) you should inform me beforehand.

An equipment access center will be available to the Open-Xers for small
items where each group could go to and borrow equipment. Such items
included will be:
2 Digicams
2 Videokamera Hi8
2 Dat-Recorder
2 Micros
2 headphones
audio adaptors

the idea is still to set up a joint radio studio with:
2 mixers (8 channels- 4 mono, 4 stereo),
2 dats
2 minidisks,
2 tape recorders
2 cd players
2 Microphones
2 headphones

There will also be two computer stations for Open-X groups for scanning,
CD burning, printing, etc.:
1Mac: Scanner / CD-burner / Zip / printer
1Pc: Scanner/ CD-burner / Zip / printer
It should be noted that the printers are "network printers" so one can
print from every PC at OpenX - 2 black and white Hewlett Packard laser
printers.

The on-the-fly documentation of the festival happenings (including Open-X
activity) will be handled this year by Ursula Reiter (Uschi) and Joachim
Schnaitter from the Futurelab. Please send the exact URLs for your Open-X
projects to either myself <black@xxxxxxxxx> or <joachims@xxxxxxxxx> and
<uschi@xxxxxxxxx> as soon as you know them.

Here are the e-mail addresses of participants. Internal communication
between the Open-Xers is of course encouraged and any horizontal activity
is welcomed. (note: if any address is wrong or left out...please give me
an update) Please feel free to use the open-x list <open-x@xxxxxx> to get
in contact with the entire group.
