about the Leonardo thing, I checked with the artist I mentioned
and got this reply:

They released a CD,with the journal, with essays written by the artists and
images but they wouln't pay us anything because they are an academic
journal. Academics who publish with them get money through the university
system for publishing.
I gave them "once only publishing rights" to my sound, but they were asking
for "world rights".

I had quite a long discussion via email with them on copright issues with
an Arts lawer here but I didn't get very far.The academic argument is
pretty boring and explotative of artists outside of academia.
