RADIO WAVES is a programme of the 8th international "Art+Communication2006:
WAVES" festival (that will take place in Riga , August 2006) introductory event
series.

The RADIO WAVES event programme includes: DIY radio workshop and lecture by new
media artist Adam Hyde (New Zealand), online introduction by radio activist
Tetsuo Kogawa from his studio in Japan (live via the internet), discussions on
inter-relation of local/global and net/fm [radio] and alternative explorations
of radio spectrum; as well as djs, music and live net.radio performances.

17.00-19.00 = DIY RADIO WORKSHOP: ?How to build mini-fm transmitter and to start
broadcasting? ? conducted by Adam Hyde, online introduction by Tetsuo Kogawa.

Tetsuo Kogawa will open an online workshop from his studio in Japan . The
workshop will cover how to build your own mini-fm transmitter from very simple
electronic materials. The workshop will be 2 hours and all materials will be
provided. No previous experience with electronics is necessary.

Tetsuo Kogawa (Tokyo/Japan) is widely known for his blend of criticism,
performance and activism. He has introduced free radio to Japan , and he has
written over 30 books on media culture, film, the city and urban space, and
micro politics.

* SNEAKER RADIO ? Lecture by Adam Hyde ( New Zealand ): ?on changing notion of
?radio? ? since radio has started to exploit internet protocols instead of
spectrum...?

Since internet radio broke radio away from the spectrum every facet of radio has
changed. The change in distribution mediums, from the spectrum to Internet
Protocols, has redefined audiences, production techniques, authorship, and
distribution strategies. What radio is, is now up for redefinition. Adam Hyde
will investigate what it is now we might refer to by 'radio' and what the near
future might bring to further develop this new idea of radio.

Adam Hyde (r a d i o q u a l i a / New Zealand ) is an artist with an
international practice who works with software, online audio and video, sound
art, new technologies and more traditional forms of broadcast.

activists, media theorists, alternative radio/tv programme producers,
radioamateurs, and remote contributors from re-boot.fm / Berlin, Tetsuo Kogawa

ADAM HYDE is an artist with an international practice who works with software,
online audio and video, sound art, new technologies and more traditional forms
of broadcast. He has also gained extensive management experience, having
managed the radio station Contact89FM ( Hamilton , New Zealand ) and held the
position of CEO for 95bFM ( Auckland , New Zealand ). Adam also established and
managed New Zealands first community television station, Static TV. Adam has
also worked at management level internationally in the IT sector as Business
Development Manager at Australias Virtual Artists (Adelaide, Australia), as
well as managing the Software and Web Development departments at the renown
Dutch Internet Service Provider XS4ALL (Amsterdam).

In addition to management experience in the IT sector Adam has an established
reputation as a free software programmer. Adam has developed several free
software applications including the FrequencyClock, and ReCo(de)R (yet to be
released). Adam is an active member of the free software development group DYNE
and is co-founder of the Open Source Streaming Alliance.


TETSUO KOGAWA'S interests range over a variety of disciplines and critical
approaches. After studying philosophy at Sophia and Waseda universities, he
taught at Wako University for 17 years. He is currently Professor of
Communication Studies at Tokyo Keizai University 's Department of
Communications.

Kogawa introduced free radio to Japan , and is widely known for his blend of
criticism, performance and activism. He has written over 30 books on media
culture, film, the city and urban space, and micro politics. Most recently he
has combined the experimental and pirate aesthetics of the Mini-FM movement
with internet streamed media.
