Deadline: March 12, 2004 (postmarked)
Discovering ideas for tomorrow in young minds today is the aim of this grant supported by voestalpine and focusing on the intersection of art and technology. The category’s target group includes students at universities, art schools, technical schools, and other educational institutions as well as creatives from all over the world, aged 19-27, who have developed as-yet-unproduced concepts in the fields of media art, media design or media technology. The winner receives a stipend in the amount of 7,500 Euro and will be invited to spend a term as Researcher and Artist in Residence at the Ars Electronica Futurelab. Judging will be done by a panel of experts.
The Ars Electronica Futurelab makes its resources and its staff’s expertise available to support the realization of the project during the term of residency. The awarded concept or the completed work will be presented in the Prix Ars Electronica’s “CyberArts 2004” catalog and as part of the Ars Electronica Exhibition at the 2004 Ars Electronica Festival. Strongly committed to an interdisciplinary approach, and as part of an international network of collaborating institutional associates, the Ars Electronica Futurelab carries out its R&D projects together with artists and scientists from all over the world.
The awarding of this grant is made possible by voestalpine.
What should be entered?
Each concept is to be entered in the form of a concept description. This description should explain the essentials of the idea and how it could be realized in terms of technical details (hardware and software), production tasks, and spatial requirements.
Please note that the jury’s decision will be based primarily on the concept description and the production plan, so please be sure that the information provided in your entry is as specific as possible.
The production plan should contain a clear description of the production tasks involved in the project, and an indication of whether the particular task is to be performed by the entrant personally or by someone else (e.g. Ars Electronica Futurelab personnel).
Concept Realization and Presentation
The realization and/or documentation of the concept will be carried out during the grant recipient’s term as Researcher and Artist in Residence at the Ars Electronica Futurelab (scheduled for June-September 2004). The concept or the project realized during the term of residency will be presented at the 2004 Ars Electronica Festival. If the realization of the selected concept will take longer than the three months provided for this purpose and if the availability of the author throughout this extended timeframe is not assured, then the author must guarantee that the concept/idea will be able to be presented in conjunction with the 2004 Ars Electronica Festival. Preparations for the presentation can be made only in consultation with and subject to the approval of the organizer. The organizer reserves the right to determine the format in which this presentation will take place within the framework of the Ars Electronica Festival program.
There exists the possibility of rescheduling the term of residency, although this decision is strictly up to the organizers. The stipend in the amount of 7,500 Euro will be awarded on a one-time basis to the entrant(s) submitting the concept selected by the jury, and includes all travel and lodging costs during the term of residency and/or during the 2004 Ars Electronica Festival, regardless of whether the concept was submitted by an individual entrant or a group of entrants. If the stipend is awarded to such a group, then participation in the residency program is limited to three persons from among the group.
The costs of realizing the winning concept are not covered by this 7,500-Euro stipend; rather, such costs will be covered by additional funds to be provided by voestalpine and the Ars Electronica Center, who reserve the right to determine the actual realization budget. The framework conditions governing such realization (such as, but not limited to, budgeting, resource planning, scheduling and concept presentation) will be established in a separate agreement with the grant recipient.
The winner of the grant will be notified by April 30, 2004. It is in your own best interest to make certain that either you or the proxy nominated in your entry can be reached at the addresses, etc. specified in your entry throughout the period of time when winners will be notified.
The Prix Ars Electronica 2004 awards presentation will take place on September 3, 2004 during the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz. This event will be televised in Austria by ORF and throughout Europe on the 3sat satellite channel.
The recipient of the grant will agree to receive the certificate attesting to it in person, and to present the work to the public during the 2004 Ars Electronica Festival. Groups are requested to nominate one person or a maximum of two people as representatives.
