   It should be noted the problem with providing free MP3 encoders is not
the willingness (or ability) of programmers, but because there's a patent
on the encoding algorithm and the owner wants people to pay licensing fees
for it, which free software authors obviously can't do.  So they've made
due by supplying patches to the reference implementation the patent owner
supplies.
   Plus, the encoding algorithm _is_ compute-intensive, so will either
require a fast machine or (if you've got it) special hardware to do in
real-time.
