Laidback biography:
Laidback aka 27 year old Jason Cohen kicked the bolshi
label off in April 1996 with the stripped down, chunky
hip-hop breakbeat of the eponymously titled ?Laidback
EP?. With his roots firmly in old school hip hop and
electro (he bought his first pair of decks when he was
13), his second and third releases ?Wrecktify? and
?Coldrock/B-Boy Noise? became firm favourites with Djs
and punters alike, mashing up phat beats with tuff
scratching and breaks.
Jason?s debut album ?International? was released
December of last year and has been universally well
received along with the accompanying single also
titled ?International?. His next release ?Rock Your
World? was an uptempo house party organ grinding
breakbeat workout complete with remix and dubbed out
b-side track ?MasterBlast?.
October ?98 saw Laidback?s first vocal track with
?Escape? featuring the rapping talents of Sir Real.
The music is a hybrid of jazzy sax, funky drums with
a twist of a 60s flavour but never losing Laidback?s
tough driven style. This track was received well at
radio remaining on the A-list a London alternative
station XFM for 4 weeks. His music has been released
throughout Europe and Australia and his djing has
taken him as far afield as Australia (3 week tour),
Canada, USA, Europe in addition to the ubiqitious dates
in the UK including The Big Bang Tour which
incorporated other likeminded labels such as Athletico
and Concrete.
Laidback is currently out and about djing on his own
and sometimes accompanied by his rapper Sir Real.
