live-stock ram/fm

72-hour audio event, live webcast and FM radio from ARC, Stockton

9AM 28 APRIL to 9AM 1 MAY 2000

www.live-stock.org and 107. fm

Open House at Arc: 9am-1am Friday & Saturday, 9am-11pm Sunday

live-stock ram/fm presents 72 hours of experimental audio, transmitted live on local FM and webcast via the internet. Bringing together material and participants from Britain and beyond, the project aims to create a sound collage of localities - an audio montage of exterior environments and interior lives.

Broadcasting live from ARC in Stockton, the project seeks to avoid traditional radio formats and will not focus exclusively on music. Rather, the event will be an experiment in bringing together cultural production in audio formats from around the region and creating a meeting place for this activity alongside national and international work. This is made possible by using the technologies of a very local FM broadcast in conjunction with the global reach of a webcast.

The programme takes a interdisciplinary approach, including writers, musicians, performance, sound and new media artists, as well as DJs and community groups. Contributions range from a verbal map of Stockton, advertising jingles and a poetic soundscape, to a sonic map of the body, live electronica, internet rap, a mobile phone choir and the dulcet tones of tea dancing blended into the mix.

International guests include the Latvian-based media artists and activists Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits, who work in experimental net radio and co-founded the media centre E-Lab in Riga. Participating media arts organisations include Stockton On-line, IDEA (Manchester), Synergy (Huddersfield), Irational (London) and Mute Magazine (London). National and regional contributors include Hayley Newman, Billy Liar, Locus Plus, Karen Guthrie & Nina Pope, the Hype Youth Project, Ellen Phethean, Cleveland Arts, Suzanne Treister and many more.

During the 72 hour event, Arc will be transformed into a vibrant hub of activity. Live performances, workshops, video screenings and presentations will be presented througout the event. Evening performances include zoviet*france, Project Dark and a special edition of the Verb Garden, featuring a transatlantic poetry slam between Cleveland (US) and Cleveland (UK). Admission to the evening performances is £3/other activities are FREE. For further details regarding tickets and booking information, please visit the live-stock website: www.live-stock.org or ring Arc on 01642 666 600.

For the listening audience, live-stock ram/fm provides exposure to a much wider range of audio material than a traditional FM radio station. There will be many voices to hear and many points of view, reflecting a busy local cultural scene and providing an innovative, unusual and at times unpredictable encounter between the local and the global.

The project is initiated and supported by Northern Arts. Additional support has been provided by the Arts Council of England (Project Dark), Yorkshire Arts and Northwest Arts. Development work has been undertaken by Lisa Haskel and artistic direction has been provided by Kate Rich, Digital Artist in Residence at ARC. The project is managed by Michelle Hirschhorn (m.hirschhorn@xxxxxxxxxx).
