((o)) is a 'happening' which takes place simultaneously in
a text based world, in the datasphere of streamed media,
and at a physical site.
((o)) examines and critiques the way in which we speak to
each other. A meeting at a text-based world will stimulate
dialogue between a series of contributers. The multiple
distortion lenses of time, distance and displacement will
precipitate a performative textual chaos, fueled by
confusion caused by lag, buffering errors, language
barriers, and general misreadings.
The ongoing arbitrary interchange in this textual space
will act as a meta-generator of textual fragments, which
will provide the raw materials for a sonic piece which
explores the multi-layered dimensions of conversation.
Text from the ongoing discussions in the online meeting
point will be animated through text-to-speech synthesis and
performative readings. These audio-texts will then be
collaged with found sounds and audio pieces streamed across
the internet, to create a primordial sonic soup. ((o))
will evolve from a a simple online text dialogue to an
intricate aural cacophony.
The software, The Theory Machine,
<http://www.radioqualia.net/artician/eset.html>, will
generate the sound collage. Theorist Eric Kluitenberg will
create a specially designed 'module' for the Theory Machine
which will facilitate the fusing of the aural qocs, with
texts from various authors, and sound samples from the
ambient environment of comm_act. The sound collage will be
created over the duration of the comm_act project.
((o)) surveys the role that networks play in fracturing
communication. It observes how meaning cracks under the
pressure of interruption, mechanisation, perplexity,
misinterpretation and delay. It posits thenetwork as a the
carrier mechanism which distorts the signal, and questions
the authority of the messenger.
Textual or audiophonic contributers so far include:
