I was doing a little research on Arbitron's ratings of webcasts and
something caught my eye!
There are unbelievably high ratings for TSL or time spent listening to
Webcasts by Arbitron compared to traditional radio.
7 HOURS Listening to a radio station on the NET! Wow! I wonder what
speed..and wonder where most of the listeners were from....(no way to know
zip code yet as done in traditional ratings, or maybe there is a
way? Anyone know the qualitative data or demographic data, can they cross
reference an opt-in webcast list?)
And I wonder why it's all Washington DC (which is where I live) stations
that are the top 3 Time Spent Listening Stations.
We have high Net Penetration in DC (Top 5 in nation, I believe) - but I
haven't seen any stats to say that government employees were listening more
(or had access through their firewalls)...but I suspect that it's because
we happen to have one of the largest growing high technology area - home of
AOL and a number of other high tech companies right over the bridge in
Virginia.
In terms of time spent tuning, the top three Internet channels were:
www.smoothjazz1059.com, the smooth jazz ABC station, WJZW-FM, Washington
D.C. streamed by Real Broadcast Networks, with seven hours and 30 minutes
average time spent tuning; www.kpla.com, the adult contemporary station,
KPLA-FM, Washington, D.C., streamed by Magnitude Networks, with seven hours
and eight minutes average time spent tuning, and www.mix1073fm.com, the hot
adult contemporary ABC station, WRQX-FM, Washington, D.C, with six hours
and 39 minutes average time spent tuning (see attached Top 25 Time Spent
Tuning list).
PS in terms of most listeners - one of the earliest webcasters around ever
- KPIG takes number 1 position - congratulations to Wild Bill.
They were one of Xing's (now bought by Real) very very early stations. they
started back in 1995! Wild Bill is the host of the station we demonstrated
live at the NAB in September of 1995! 5 Years...Can you believe it? More
information on Arbitron.com and I understand Europe is getting ready to do
ratings for the web too...out in a few months. This is good news - you
need qualitative to convince advertising agencies to buy spots or
sponsorships!
:) smiles
