AiR is...
Usually, Artists in Residence means artists(activists)leave their own
reside place, stay foreign country for a few months to a year, and they
exchange art works with foreigners. But our Artists in Residence hold for a
term of two weeks. (We called our Artists in Residence IMI-AiR-98)
This year,It is the third times. IMI-AiR-98 has a concept "Bring up artist
who link with society". IMI-AIR-98 invite artists(activists)from
Europe, hold lectures, fieldworks, and opened symposium. This theme is
"Cut'n'Mix". The host of opened symposium is Toshiya Ueno. He is an IMI
instructor as well as an IMI-AiR-98 director. His specialities are history
of social thought, cultural studies, and media research. He attends at
Documenta work
space(Kassel) , Digitale(Koln) ,and many symposiums.
Also he has extensive personal relationship. For example, Geert Lovink,he is
a radio program producer and a co-founder or the Digital city ,the
Amsterdam-based Freenet and Benjamin Persovic,he is activist of "Press
Now",that is the dutch support campaign for independent media in Former
Yugioslavia. And he is a former editor of the subculture magazine "Arkzin" in
Zagreb.
tenpo is..
Internet radio team "tenpo"started in may, this year.It was organized by
sound team and web team which joined in IMI-AiR-98.Lots of members in sound
team want to broadcast a radio.
At first, they thought that they would broadcast a radio by small
transmitter. However,we decide to broadcast it by internet because Geert
Lovink,a guest of IMI-AiR-98,has acted at Free radio in the long time and
also supported the independent media with a positive attitude. That's the
start of our internet radio team"tenpo".
We noticed that it has been the best way for us to select the internet radio
through our costs, and the possibility of internet radio in the future. On the
other side, there are a lot of problems in the internet environment in
Japan. For example, lines does not have enough capacity, and also,it cost too
much to use the internet service provider, and it is a poor management about
copyright problems on net in Japan.
We,internet radio team that is the official team of IMI-AiR-98,are planning
to broadcast the symposium and the club event in the term of IMI-AiR-98,and
we are often testing the broadcast.
September7-10,1998,we joined in ARS ELECTRONICA,in Lintz,Austria.That was
the big step for us.Because our mind for internet radio has been improved
and we got a good estimation around us.Here are 14 ladies and
gentlemen.Internet radio team"tenpo" is going to make a broadcasting station
by ourself.
In Japanese, the team name "tenpo" is defined as "Leave to chance aimlessly"
or"nature recontre".In addition,"teMpo"in Italic means "keep speed
specified(music, group walking like army)".We named our internet radio team
"tenpo".We changed "teMpo" to "teNpo",because we want to dismantle and
re-constract the frame of that term.
