WKCR 89.9 FM <ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL> 00:00 11.17.98 - 23:59 11.19.98

The New Music Department of radio station WKCR-FM 89.9 in New York City is
pleased to announce its first Electronic Music Festival. For 72
consecutive hours, between 12am Tuesday November 17th until 12am Friday
Novemeber 20th, WKCR will devote itself exclusively to the broadcast of
new music constructed through electronic technology. With this festival
we seek to combine the educational with the experimental, through
programming that is both historical and progressive in scope and through a
testing of the conventional boundaries of radio as a medium.

The three days of the festival will be divided along very general
historical lines. The first day will feature segments focusing
on the electronic works of John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, and Karlheinz
Stockhausen, as well as overviews on computer compositions and the use of
electronics in contemporary classical music. Segments on live
electronics, Pierre Henry, David Tudor, and electronics in historic
avant-rock are slated for the second day, and the third will feature
noise, musique concrete, ambient music and idm, and contemporary
electroacoustics. These scheduled sections will be combined with freeform
DJ sets, live performances, and on-air sound installation.

The festival will conclude Thursday evening with a live radio/web
networking project produced in collaboration with the Brooklyn-based
collective Fakeshop. The event will take place between 8pm and midnight
in both virtual and actual space. Sound signals originating at Fakeshop
will be sent via internet connection to artists in various location in
Europe and the US, who will manipulate the sound and send the results, or
send entirely new sounds, back to the source to be manipulated again.
Thus the original sonic information will be progressively transformed,
created, and obliterated as it is bounced back and forth between the
participants -- an audio exquisite corpse. The realtime results will be
broadcast over the air.

Yours truly,

Susie Jae
New Music Director
