just in case somebody has been deperately researching for weeks now:
The Harmoniums are not an invention of Isaac Asimov, but of Kurt Vonnegut.
You will find them in his "Sirens of Titan". Also, they are mentioned in
David Toop's "Ocean of Sound", and, well, they are not really birds but
more like tangerines...  ;)
