Dear Guiseppe Neri,
The Ars Acustica Group of the EBU was surprised, shocked and saddened to
hear of the decision by RAI to shut down AUDIO BOX, one of our most
important founding members.
The announcment was even more surprising because it comes at a time when
the pioneering work of Audio Box, and the Ars Acustica group, is being
increasingly recognised as a major contribution to the discussion about
the future of the radio medium in the age of digitalisation and new
telecommunication technologies. The recent expansion of the group to
include ever more public national radio stations - and from all
departments; music, literature, feature - testifies to the importance of
the work of the Ars Acustica group as an inspiration and model for the
creation of a new radio for a new era.
AUDIOBOX was always an important node in ARS ACUSTICA's international
network of practical and theoretical discourse about the nature of radio
today. AUDIOBOX played an vital part in global (EBU) radio and internet
projects such as HORIZONTAL RADIO or RIVERS & BRIDGES. It helped develop
very early networked simultaneous on-site and on-air projects such as LA
LUNGA NOTTE between Jerusalem, Cologne, Innsbruck and Rimini. AUDIOBOX was
at the forefront of the artistic interdisciplinary research into the
importance of sound in today's multi-media environment. Nobody who
participated in the stimulating festivals organised or coproduced by
AUDIOBOX will ever forget their impact and artistic originality.
AUDIO BOX was always looked up to as an exemplary program and as such had a
very powerful influence on the international development of radio-art. It
would be indeed a very great loss to the growing network of producers of
radio art in public broadcasting organisations if AUDIOBOX, and with it the
Italian node, should vanish from the radio map just when it is most needed
as a pardigm of a "different" radio.
Therefore, in the name of all the producers of radio-art who make up the
ARS ACUSTICA group, I implore RAI to reconsider its decision.
Yours sincerely,
