For the first time in its long history the
Ars Electronica Festival features a regular
FESTIVAL RADIO - (something that is not easily
achieved under the legal conditions governing
broadcasting in Austria.)

ARS RADIO LIVE will be produced at RADIO FRO
(Stadtwerkstatt Linz) and at Open X
(Kunstradio in Brucknerhaus): a dual ISDN line
will connect the two production spaces

ARS RADIO AKTUELL
Daily:
18:00-19:00 (6-7 pm) - RADIO FRO about itself
19:00-21:00 (7-9 pm) -  interviews, commentaries,
highlights, live-mixes, previews for the night
and the following day.

ARS RADIO NONSTOP
RADICAL RADIO*: Radio that is not "tyrannized by
the clock".
(*R.Murray Schafer: "RADICAL RADIO" 1987).

ARS RADIO NONSTOP consists of the following
elements:

-  ARS RADIO - the SYMPOSION RADIO:
   transmitting unedited excerpts from the lectures
   using the stereo signal to broadcast the original
   lectures and their translations simultaneously
   on separate channels.

-  ARS RADIO - the  OPEN RADIO:
   ARS ELECTRONICA participants talk, produce, mix
   radio, realise their radio-art-projects, create
   links between the Internet and local radio, etc.

-  ARS RADIO - the NIGHT RADIO:
   live- shows from Supercollider and other events
   On Sept 11th from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. ARS RADIO is
   joining the LONG NIGHT OF RADIO ART with
   Negativland.

-  ARS RADIO - the AMBIENT RADIO:
   soundscapes by international artists form the
   backbone of ARS RADIO.

ARS RADIO is listening in on the live events and
recorded sounds of the Ars Electronica Festival.
It does not attempt to impose its own time-structure
upon events.

ARS RADIO LIVE - the media-political background:

The experiment of ARS RADIO marks the start of
RADIO FRO's broadcasting on its new (licensed)
frequency 105 Mhz (untill now RADIO FRO was
only present on the Linz-cable and on line).
RADIO FRO - one of very few independent radio
stations in Austria - begins regular broadcasting
in October 1998.

Radio can and should play a very decisive part
in mediating contemporary culture and art and
should produce and broadcast original radio
artworks, i.e. in the space of exhibitions,
concerts, festivals etc. in order to insert them
into the public space of radio.ARS RADIO, as one
possible model for a cultural "event-radio",
underlines the lack of any provision for
temporary culture/art event radio-licences in
the new Austrian broadcasting laws.

This summer Kunstradio produced an "Exhibition
Radio" for the "Kunst in der Stadt" exhibition
in Bregenz:
