no need to step back. reading your mail i suddenly realised that the life
span of formations and events (and mailinglists) is shrinking at a rapid
speed. and the xchange list to me always meant an ongoing project,
primarily concerned with 'xchange' related to audio streaming, networks and
technology. you are right, it is scary to see how quickly a forum for
debate can turn into a forum for promotion and requests. i guess it comes
down to the responsobilities people take for their media.

you are right, but the same counts for the mailinglist - and i guess that's
where some people got confused. this is a channel for xchange and - as you
said - 'just fucking do it' has always been understood by me as happening
in both channels. i get extremely confused when having to make a
distinction between 'thinking' and 'doing' - many other topics such as
access, training, etc are related to that divide. if you want to make a
distinction it might be: out there on stage (streaming) and backstage
(mailing); or you might say in the fields and in the library; whatever:
always onweb (and now in flesh in berlin).
for me the necessity and surplus value of communication lies in the
combination of communication channels. the mailinglist is a very personal
forum, the audio streaming (when live) might range from the same personal
feel to highly *official* set ups. therefore i don't think the distinction
between the mailinglist and the audiostreaming is of any help. in fact it
might make the whole set up more estranged.
when convex tv. did their first shows, we had installed the 'tv plug in'
which was (technically) little more than a series of refresh pages which
would be put on the server in sync to the on-air show. that way people
could follow the show in text while listening to it on-air. at the same
time links from the text would lead to other projects, so you could do the
*daydreaming thing* while listening to the radio - as people do - and drift
into other spheres of entertainment or knowledge. that was a very simple
way of bringing the net into the radio domain (as a matter of fact that
HTML DJing was quite stressful, because it meant an hour of ftp transfer in
time with a 40 second interval of updates...). i still think that it was
very interesting for us to think about the overlap of text and audio for
web/radio interfaces. as you can imagine: the 'tv plug in' is completely
unsuitable for live and wacky radio stuff (and a lot of work if you have
the transcript of an hour of talk radio).
the fm interfacing will be an interesting field to explore. i also think
that the low power fm transmitter will be a good addition to net.radio
because it does allow live broadcasts from nearby locations to go online
without having to depend on a phone line and laptop. to me that is the real
advantage: to get three or four mini-fm transmitters and mix the locally
next to the computer into the audio streaming. if anybody is interested in
doing some action in that field: please feel invited to come to Revolting
this autumn in manchester. i hopw we can set up some extensions to the
telecom networks!

thanks for getting the rant out of the way. somebody had to do it - and now
we cleared our throats for more heated debates. dimilarities or differences
will be minor obstacles ;)
