hi all,
a lot of you are now in berlin...lucky you getting the real face to face
meetings..i hope that much of the discussion gets thrown onto the list.
maybe there is a computer there where people can post as the ideas come
into their heads. or a stenographer-monkey that is typing everything
straight into a machine. how about conference-net.radio ocr?
from a few posts ago, i am afraid that i have to agree with bosma's humour
theory and award 50 eurovision song contest points to bosma and only 15 to
august who left his humour under the bed.
which brings to mind an interesting prospect: since we are all so bad at
putting up names with our broadcasts i was waiting for a new piece of
pop-writing in wired or somewhere titled " on net.radio nobody knows if
you are a dog".
>> needed to make all of our collective materials available - even after they
>> have been broad or narrowcast. maybe step one would be a coordination of
>> RealAudio mirror sites...
>that's something!
i gather that there are many people bringing structures to the berlin
party. these range from
cd-publishing enterprises, to 'horizontal radio,' paper publishing, the
wide spread dissemination and automisation of the real audio system (see
SER/radioqualia) etc. these structures are useful not only because
they are concrete but many of the models can be duplicated at will between
organisations.
now in reference to the above thread, it is true that in the commerical
formula, it would be to the community's advantage to centralise information
dissemination . like a net.radio guide for the overground/underground in
response to the current net.radio directories linked off the real site for
example. but one could argue that this would be quite hard work, possibly
smudging or interfering with the cultural reference of the organisations
that currently exists. if someone was to do this favour to the community,
one would also hope that they would be paid for this service somehow. in
addition there are issues of who this service would be catering to, is it
just for people that are interested in the underground?
in the short term, and with a bit of server space, there is a cgi/database
option. there are some programming skills floating around, and even
something like WODA/free perl database could be hacked into submission for
an instant centralised info-source for the net.radio scene. maybe i'm
boring but i would like to see a calendar that lists the day's broadcasts
so i can channel surf without disappearing into philosophical space whilst
reading all the postings to the xchange list again.
in terms of archived broadcasts, having just encoded-to-file an hour of my
work and realising that shock horror it weighs a massive 7.5meg (did eezee
figure this out too?) i think we are all eyeing the notion that archiving
is a question of space and money. in this respect, at face value, cds are
much more cost effective: but small print runs and the hard work of
producers plus distribution means that if you priced a cd for ALL the work
it involved, it also costs big time. archiving terrestrial radio onto
cassette is cheap, and throwaway in that you can record over broadcasts
that you don't like. and yes, broadcasts are often throwaway in many
respects: they happen and then you do another one. so maybe it would be
interesting to clarify what people (yes - you) find interesting and what
they would like to hear again and again.
ok, weather report in sydney: low cloudy skies, extremely windy - wear a
hat, spitting rain, and a hangover.
zina.
