Dear Josephine,
>I wanted to wait till you were on xchange, but I heard nothing
I received <(Xchange) net, 'radio' & physical
space:E-lab/RE-lab/Xchange/OZOne> and <lecture Recycling The Future,
Vienna>. Thanks a lot.
At the moment, I have been struggling with the deadline of my
articles . So, please give me a couple of days to respond. I very
much love to discuss with you.
>[casting vs weaving]I like to have both possibilities at the same
>time. Broadcasting on the net should not replace or dominate more
>playful experiments though.
You are right. I was just talking about a tactics:even if you and I
get involved in another type of radio (whatever one call "free
radio" or "web-radio" ....), broadcast-type of radio will be growing
or not disappearing. On the contrary, our radio can not exist
without our continuous challenge and experiments. Also, even our
non-casting radio sometimes might have an element of broadcasting.
Just like the difference between massmedia and micromedia is not on
the size of coverage, the difference of conventional radio between
our radio cannot be defined by how it technologically works: it is
strange that quite a many pirate radios use similar style of
programming; also large commercial radios sometimes use "free" style
of talking, non-stop programs...(I don't to say this is nice); in
Radio Home Run, the listener frequently moved between his/her home,
the cafe where s/he listened and the station (we intended 'movement
radio') but sometimes we didn't succeeded: the listener became
passive in listening the program at his/her space quietly.
>Talking of weird sounds and audio versions of webcam, do you know
>scannersites like http://www.policescanner.com/ ?
I appreciate you the information. I used to love <Daily
Noise>(www.dtd.com/noise/) but it disappeared.
>[radio party]What kind of people go there?
Mainly artists and radio (micro radio) people, not so different from
usual party of ours. The difference is that a transmitter exits with
non-stop transmission. Also, I organized "Another Mozaic Party" when
the WWW browser "Mosaic" became popular. The aim was that people
realized how it be easy to exchange images and text without such an
'advanced' technology (at that time, WWW was a bit for selected
people):using mail technology we exchange images;every place in
Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Vancouver, Montreal, london, and
Zurich, my friends organize (usually small and casual) party along
with the Internet mail system. From 9 pm, JST (so that New York
friends had to have a breakfast party) on, the party started. Here
in Tokyo, beside the Internet, several BBSs joined. Every image had
to be decoded from mail attachment. They were printed out and showed
on the floor of the party space. The guest could send his/her
drawing images from there. It was a fan.
>["They should be shut out for more bandwidth."] I would not >go
that far...
Sorry for my rudeness. The bandwidth problem will be solved soon. I
just wanted to talking about another use of streaming technology.
>[colapse of community]Are you saying your mini fm stations are also
>to help against this?
We tried to do so but I don't think Mini FM helped revitalize
community consciousness. So, we were interested in organizing an
instant community that I called 'time[temporary]-community'. Since
the station was located in the midst of the crowded city, depending
the time, the leading figure was changed: in the afternoon the
street was full of students; in the evening of working people.....
It was interesting that the program created a group who came to the
cafe or bar near by the station in order to listen and to wait for
the chnace to visit the station.
>Do you have a date set for your next transmission?
For the present, my server of RealSystem has not permanent license
so that I can transmit only for an experiment: when I have an
appointment, I will do it anytime here. Please install RealPlayer5.0
in your computer and let me know. Do you imagine that the server is
located at my university, the west side of Tokyo. But you can send
moving images and sounds from any place if a computer with the
telephone line for the Dial-up is available.
In March, I will have a party and I will let you know the date/time.
If you receive the stream there, I would like to get a call or FAX
from your side.
>Do you know Radio Lada/Roberto Paci Dalo? Or ORFKunstradio?
I don't know Radio Lada/Roberto Paci Dalo but know Hidi Grundman of
Kunstradio. I recently didn't see her.
Do you know Dan lander or Hank Bull in Canada? They are a radio art
person.
I don't decide when I be in Europe yet. I received an invitation
from Jean Paulof "etant donne - muzakattack" (I have never seen
this magazine) for an event using videophone and web on March 18. It
is very soon. The point is my several deadlines of writings. I
suppose the early April is the best. Before that I want to send the
video of my radio workshop. Can you see the NTSC format VHS instead
of PAL? I love you to see it.
Writing to you soon.
Tetsuo
